Based on the input from non-profit models in the greater Milwaukee area and on the advice from business and ministry consultants, we agreed to start small, implementing our vision in doable increments as leaders, volunteers, material, and finances are provided.
We welcome the prayers of others to help us move forward on our timeline. While we are not all from the same religious tradition, nor do we promote any one church, we honor the sincerity of any participant’s heart to pray for us. We have a diligent group of people praying for our success. And if prayer is not part of someone’s journey at this time, we welcome your help to meet these community needs as well. We emphasize what we have in common at The Oasis Project. (If you would like prayer or informational updates email us at oasisprojectwi@gmail.com.)
We began the Oasis Learning Center in the fall of 2015 at Cushing Elementary School in Delafield, Wisconsin to serve the needs of children who need additional support. These children’s parents were not able to afford tutors for their children. Sometimes children have extenuating circumstances in their families that necessitates our services. One might think, “The Lake Country is a place with a lot of resources! Why would you start there?” In fact, there are documented pockets of significant unmet economic and social needs within our community. Multiple grants for hiring tutors for children have been denied due to proportionate resources around this area. The relative affluence of others in the community does not alleviate the needs for those who are unable to meet them. These needs can be met relatively easily as we join hands together to “love our neighbors as ourselves”.
In our first school year (2015-2016), we had 15 professional educators who volunteered to serve the needs of 27 students. Most of our volunteers were retirees, but some were still working. The success was astounding! These phenomenal results prompted invitations to expand our services to Wales and Dousman Elementary Schools in the 2016-2017 school year. (Each of these schools has around 14% of their students living at or below the poverty level.) Additionally, we were invited to expand into Kettle Moraine Middle School for the 2017-2018 school year. In the 2018-2019 school year our fifth Oasis Learning Center began at Magee Elementary in Genesee Depot. In October of 2020 we were invited to serve the North Lake School District and in January of 2021 we began serving the Oconomowoc Area School District.
We are excited about the unique partnership that we are forming with these fine public-school educators to help level the playing field for our under-resourced little friends! We long to serve as many schools and school districts as our resources expand.
As our Developer and Director Jan Frans says,
“We are building the airplane while we are flying it!”
In each phase of our development, we are creating a template that we have proven can be replicated in other communities with the same needs. We are actively seeking resources to accelerate each aspect of The Oasis Project going forward. At each juncture our bottom line is to compassionately serve the needs of our neighbors as “Good Samaritans” who, when they see needs, do not pass by but give sacrificially to meet those needs in a spirit of good will.
If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion–how can God’s love be in that person? ~1 John 3:17
