The Oasis Project FAQ’s
Are you curious? We’re glad you asked!
Why are you called The OASIS Project?
We provide an oasis of academic resources to children living in a dry place in their lives. In Western Waukesha County, when children need an academic boost, most families in our community have the resources to hire the support that’s needed. What few people in our community of relative affluence understand is that there are significant pockets of economic disadvantage with barriers to opportunity. It is due to that relative affluence that other existing programs focus in areas with higher percentages of poverty. The Oasis Project has stepped up to meet the need here by bringing under-resourced children together with experienced educators who have years of expertise and experience.
Where do you get your tutors?
Our tutor applications and recommendations come from a variety of places including: results from programs that our organization presents in the community, word of mouth from other tutors, Social Media, our contacting retired teachers or retired teacher groups that we know, referrals from anyone who knows about our work.
Are background checks required of your tutors?
All schools have required background checks.
If it would ever be the case that a school we serve doesn’t have these safeguards in place, the Oasis Project would run its own professional background check at our expense.
Most schools have a system to check the backgrounds of all volunteers.
How do children get services from your program?
Children who qualify for our services must meet at least one of two criteria: (1)They are economically disadvantaged. (The percentage of students documented in some Western Waukesha County schools is almost 25%.) And United for ALICE data highlights an additional demographic of families challenged with economic hurdles.* (2)They have some extenuating life circumstances that create academic challenges for the child which the family’s resources (financial or other) can not fully accommodate. Children who qualify for our services must be a student enrolled in an OASIS Partner School.
Any parent/guardian, teacher, or principal can recommend a child who would benefit from our services.

What steps must a tutor go through to qualify to volunteer for your program?
There are several including: OASIS training in our procedures, our requirement that all tutors must be experienced educators, and completion of a volunteer application which delineates their documented experience and lists at least two professional references.
Before acceptance and placement, volunteers must complete an interview which allows us to place tutors with thoughtful consideration.
How are tutors matched with the children they serve?
Based on our symbiotic partnership with each school we serve, OASIS provides a professional synopsis of our tutors’ background to the school representative (e.g. a principal, social worker, or reading specialist). With that synopsis in hand, the school official then looks at the needs of their students to make as close a match as possible. Our veteran teachers are accustomed to being very versatile and can teach anything. Nevertheless, we seek to pair their interests with the needs of the children for highly impactful and targeted support.
